The structure of the champion’s league had changed in time for the 97-98 season as there were six groups consisting of four teams in each group.
Defending champions, Borussia Dortmund eased past their respective group winning five of their six matches and sitting firmly at the top of their group and a passage to the quarter finals. Once again Manchester united and Juventus were paired together and they both qualified at the expense of Feyenoord and FC Kosice. The ‘group of death’ consisted of Dynamo Kiev, PSV Eidhoven, Newcastle and the mighty Barcelona. To everybody’s surprise, Barcelona completely stumbled as they were humiliated 3-0 in Kiev and disaster struck at home as they shockingly lost 4-0 to the Ukrainians. Both wins proved to be crucial for Dynamo Kiev as they topped the group with eleven points. Real Madrid came top of Group D; however they narrowly won the group at the expense of Norwegian champions, Rosenborg. Bayern Munich and Paris SG battled it out neck by neck in Group E, and by the end both clubs were level on points, however as Bayern Munich had  the much better goal difference, they qualified as group winners for the quarter finals. Paris SG’s French rival’s, Monaco, were in spectacular form in Group F, a 4-0 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen followed by a glorious 5-1 victory over Belgian outfit, Lierse SK sealed victory in the group, Bayer Leverkusen also qualified for the quarter finals as they had a good record in the group.
The quarter finals matched two German clubs together, Bayern Munich and reigning champions, Borussia Dortmund fought out a dire affair as Dortmund edged out 1-0 winners, however the second leg had to go to extra time as both sides failed to score in the first 180 minutes of play. Their German counterparts Bayer Leverkusen drew 1-1 in their home leg to Real Madrid however they put on a pathetic performance in the second leg as they were thrashed 3-0 and Real Madrid were to meet Borussia Dortmund in the semi finals, a match that Real Madrid won 2-0 on aggregate. Dynamo Kiev were brought down to earth in the quarter finals as they lost 5-2 on aggregate to Italian champions, Juventus. The final quarter final match between AS Monaco and English champions, Manchester United ended 1-1 on aggregate however Monaco entered the quarter finals thanks to scoring the away goal. Monaco were not strong enough to contain Juventus in the semi finals as they crashed out 6-4 on aggregate to the Italians.
The final, staged in Amsterdam was hardly a classic between two brilliant football clubs. Real Madrid and Juventus battled out a boring 1-0 match to the favour of the Spaniards. The only goal of the match fell to Real Madrid’s potent striker Predrag Mijatovic mid way through the second half.
