For once, Glasgow Rangers foray into Europe came near to fulfilling the form they repeatedly demonstrated in the Scottish football league. They qualified into the champions league very comfortably and in the process they eliminated English champions, Leeds United.
In Group A of the champions league, where all four clubs met each other at home and away, Marseille proved to be Rangers toughest test. After 75 minutes of the home tie against the French champions, Marseille, Rangers were down 2-0 and seemed to be dead and buried. However goals from Hateley and McSwegan earned them a draw and a great chance of reaching the European Cup Final. Both Marseille and Rangers easily surpassed Club Bruges and CSKA Moscow, the other clubs in the group. The winner takes all match was played on April 7th 1993 between Marseille and Rangers. Once again Rangers exhibited sterling courage to come back from one goal behind; however the draw was never going to be enough.
The final of the 1993 European Cup was between Marseille and AC Milan; Basile Boil scored the only goal of the match as Marseille beat AC Milan. Marseille were now the first French team to bring home the European Cup trophy.
